Tutu studied at the Pretoria Bantu Normal College from 1951 through 1954, and went on to teach at Johannesburg Bantu High School and at Munsienville High School in Mogale City.

In 1954 Tutu completed a teaching diploma from the Pretoria Bantu Normal College and later a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Africa (UNISA).
St. Peter's Theological College, Johannesburg, LTh, 1960
He continued his studies, this time in theology, at St Peter's Theology College in Rosettenville and in 1960 was ordained as an Anglican priest, following in the footsteps of his mentor and fellow activist, Trevor Huddleston.

Tutu travelled to England to undertake further theological study, obtaining a Bachelor of Divinity at Kings College, London, in 1965 and a Masters in Theology in 1966, also from Kings.
