About: Architectural Context

Chappel

The architectural challenge offers a unique opportunity to explore the transformation of Matlosana’s heritage into the reality of a place where all communities can come together in celebration of Life and the purpose of the Anglican Diocese of Matlosane. The design acknowledges the heritage influence of indigenous and western cultures and moves towards the complexity of

an African style. As the Birth place of Archbishop Desmond Tutu and in reverence to the works and endeavors of the Archbishop a commemorative statue is to be designed at the main approach. The life history and achievements of the Archbishop are to be honored in the Museum building, where visitors will also be treated to other interactive experiences.

The inclusionary architectural experience of the site is to be felt by the creation of open public spaces set ‘between and in-between’ the building elements, landscaped to invite pausing moments for both the passer-by and end user. This is to be a truly ‘African’ experience and, not for the first time, a Market Area set between and in-between the Chapel/Auditorium and Skills Development Center is to provide for the ebb, flow and interaction between visitor and trader. A tea garden alongside the Market Area will allow for the resting of tired limbs and sustaining of the human need for food and refreshment.

The expressive structure of the Cross is used as the principle support mechanism for the design of a covered walkway which links the Market court to the main square and other buildings. Auditorium

Beyond the design brief cognizance is to be taken of other nodes of commerce, entertainment, and excellence, to be found within the other areas of Matlosana, such as the proposed Goudkoppie Development and the N12 corridor. The development of such local and national linkages in terms of their relevance to the surrounding community will need to be incorporated into the final design footprint and cultural identity of this heritage site.

Design Constraints

In terms of sustainable Architecture and the environmental need to reduce consumables to within desired limits, the design of the buildings will consider the ways and means of utilizing natural lighting in all instances and the building fabric will provide the optimum insulation values to minimize the power required in terms of heating cooling and ventilation.
